Shankar Jaikishan and Asha Parekh, An Amazing Association

The composer duo and the actress had one of the most productive
associations since their ten year combination produced ten movies.
Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961): Nasir Hussain’s breezy debut movie was
written, produced and directed him. The runaway hit movie has Dev
Anand and Asha Parekh in the lead and a super album. Yet, he never
had SJ work for him again. There are a total of eight songs with Hasrat
writing six of them and Shailendra write two. There are two duets by
Rafi and Lata with both singing three solos each.
Love in Tokyo (1966): The blockbuster movie has Joy Mukherjee and
Asha Parekh in the lead. There are eight songs in the super hit album.
Lata sang four solos and Rafi sang three with one being a tandem
number while Manna Dey sang one solo. Every song was a
chartbuster.Hasrat wrote seven songs with Shailendra writing one.
Shikar (1966): The murder mystery movie is produced and directed by
Aatmaram. Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Asha Parekh played key
roles. All six songs in the popular album are written by Hasrat. Asha
sang three solos and sang one duet with Lata. Rafi sang one solo while
Mahendra Kapoor sang a duet with Krishna Kalle. Asha won a Filmfare
Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her song,”Parde Mein Rehne
Do.”
Kanyadaan (1968): Produced by Mohan Segal, the romantic drama is
directed by Rajendra Bhatia. Shashi Kapoor played the leading role
opposite Asha Parekh. It was the fourth highest grossing movie. Hasrat
wrote four songs in the album while Neeraj write three. Rafi sang three
solos and Lata two. Mahendra Kapoor sang a solo and a duet with Asha.

Kahin Aur Chal (1968): Jal Mistry produced the movie while Vijay Anand wrote and directed it. Dev Anand and Asha Parekh played the lead
roles. The movie was pulled out of theaters by its financier, Tolaram, days after it’s release to show it as a loss in his income taxes to offset
the profits from his other ventures. This resulted in the movie failing at the box office. There are six songs in the album. Shailendra and Hasrat
wrote three each. Lata sang three solos, Rafi sang two solos and one duet with Asha. Pagla Kahin Ka (1970): The movie was directed by Shakti Samantha and had Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh in the lead. It had a disappointing run at the box office. There are six solos in the album. Hasrat wrote five
and S. H. Bihari one. Rafi sang three, Lata sang two, Asha and Manna Dey sang one each. Bhai Bhai (1970): Ratan Mohan produced the crime movie directed by Raja Nawathe. Sunil Dutt acted opposite Asha Parekh. There are sixsolos in the album with five written by Hasrat and one by S. H. Bihari.
Rafi sang three, Lata two and Asha sang one. It had a mediocre performance. Jawan Mohabbat (1971): Bhappi Sonie directed the movie with Shammi
Kapoor and Asha Parekh in the lead. There are eight songs in the album. Hasrat wrote six, Shailendra and Rajinder Krishan wrote one
each. Rafi sang four solos with Lata and Asha singing one each. Two duets are sung by Rafi and Asha. The movie had a luke warm reception.
Nadaan (1971): Deven Verma produced and directed the movie. It has Navin Nischal and Asha Parekh playing key roles in the drama which
had a disappointing run. Hasrat wrote the entire album with seven songs. Mukesh sang four songs and Asha sang three.

Jwala (1971): The movie with Sunil Dutt and Madhubala in the leading roles, is directed by M. V. Raman. Due to a prolonged delay in the
release of the movie started in the 50s, it did not fare well at the box office. Asha played a supporting role. There are eight songs in the
album. Rajinder Krishan wrote six songs and Shailendra wrote two. Lata sang three solos, a duet with Manna Dey and another with Asha. Lata
also sang a trio with Geeta Dutt and Sudha Malhotra. Rafi and Mukesh sang a solo each. Although Asha acted in nine movies with SJ music, not all of them were successful. But the albums were winners.
